Lokesvara Thangka Center (LTC) accentuates this vow of bodhisattva Avalokitesvara while engaging in its activities. LTC registered under Small and Cottage Scale Industry is a nominal profit oriented organization dedicated to welfare of Thangka artists of Nepal.
The word “Lokesvara” is derived from Sanskrit where Loka means the “world” and Isvara means the “lord”. Hence, Lokesvara means the Lord of the world.
LTC is comprised of a
group of artists
mostly Tamang ethnic who have come from a long lineage of Buddhist art
and continued the tradition of Thangka painting as profession. It has
been promoting the indigenous skill and knowledge of Thangka painting
of ethnic Himalayan
people who have been involved in this business since the inception of
tourism in Nepal.
LTC provides initial shelter with security and opportunity of job to those Thangka artists who do not have anyone in Kathmandu city. We provide Thangka painting training to young rural migrants with job guarantee which enable them to stand on their own feet, gain support for higher education and also an opportunity to learn different skills and knowledge about and other than Thangka too. Our students also receive Buddhist philosophy classes for acquiring in-depth knowledge about Thangka, its cultural significance and relation with Buddhism. It has focused its activities to generate subsistent income and value to art and the real artist since the time of establishment.
