BWFNepal and its Active Projects

Friday, December 25, 2009 by Hezekiah Allen and Nabraj Lama

The active projects for BWFNepal for this year are:

  1. Womens Awareness and Empowerment Movement-

We will continue to pursue goals of educating women that we established in 2006, as a first of its kind project in the Nepalese society. It is the motivating belief of this program that as women are educated they become more capable of-and interested in-educating their children. It is assumed that working with women is the most efficient way to promote universal literacy in Nepal. We will focus our energy on: education, skills training, and motivational program.

  2. Better World Child Club- A community resource for children up to grade 5. The goal is to teach children the importance of civil engagement through education, community service, recreation, and entertainment. BWFNepal will work directly with children and families to provide a positive and socially constructive daycare option.
  3. Blood Donation Program- In the midst of political chaos and violence the BWFNepal came together to donate blood to help those injured in the 2006 peoples movement. The event has grown every year since. In 2010 we are expceting the event to be even more succesful. The event is carried out in cooperation with Nepal Red Cross.
  4. Heritage Walk and Cultural Preservation- Nepal is the only nation in the world where you can go to one world heritage site to another within a distance of 10 km. It is correct to say that Nepal has lots of heritage. So BWFN had started Heritage Walk program with the goal to inform people about the value of these heritage. Now BWFN is planning to not only inform people about its value, but also has initiated to preserve it. We are planning to do cleaning campaign around the heritage sites, do research on such heritage site and work with government and non-government organization to preserve it. Now the first and third Saturdays of every month the BWFNepal will take a walking tour of cultural sites. Visitors to Nepal are welcome to join the family for this walk.

  5. Waste Reduction-  This program is aimed specifically at plastic shopping bags used in Kathmandu. The garbage sometimes fills the streets. We are working to develop, distribute, and encourage the use of durable alternatives. If you travel to Nepal remember to ask all the shops for a reuseable bag. Soon more information will be available about durable options produced by BWFNepal.
  6. Social Justice Campaign- In cooperation with BWFI we will work to identify organizations, companies, or governments that are engaged in exploitative actions. We will undertake a non-violent geurilla campaign to disrupt these exploitative relationships. We will work to develop a global network of agents to carry out global actions.
  7. Development Forum- This forum will cooincide with the Nepal Annual Meeting. The topic for 2010 will be "watershed reconstruction." The BWFNepal will bring together a panel of politicians, scientists, and community figures to discuss ides and strategies for community level water management practices. It will include youth section.
